Kit Hill Granite Co Ltd

Situated on the northern flank of Kit Hill are two disused quarries. These were very active quarries that were able to produce high quality granite. Their success was down to the nearby East Cornwall Mineral line. An incline from the quarries to the railway sidings ensured a cheap and easy method of transporting the granite to all parts.

Kit Hill granite - a fine grained grey stone.

Views of the quarry. Since production finished in 1955 the deeper workings have now flooded.

Detail of the bore holes used to split the blocks.

The incline.

One of the artifacts still on site - a tramway wagon.

The incline originally was narrow guage but was later converted to standard guage. This is a sample of the narrow guage rail.

About me

Retired and still active in a couple of hobbies that have kept me going for 55 years ! Photography, particularly buses and coaches kept me occupied as the main interest. It lasted until 2004 when my wife died and I decided to spend the family "silver". That led me into actually preserving buses and the fleet currently stands at 12 !
